2024 SATHIO GROUP Australian Badminton Open Returns to Sydney

Following on from the highly anticipated bi-annual Thomas & Uber Cup held in Chengdu China, avid badminton fans are now keeping a watchful eye on the breadth of players making a name for themselves, in the rest of the 2024 World Tour tournaments.

Coming up in our own backyard, the SATHIO GROUP Australian Badminton Open is an annual Super 500 event that is held in Sydney, as part of the World Tour Circuit. The tournament entry sees over 270 players from 26 countries ready to contend for a podium spot this June 11th – June 16th.

Players in each discipline compete tirelessly through the year, gunning for a spot in the HSBC World Tour Finals to be held in Hangzhou, China in December. Only the top eight players or pairs in the BWF World Tour rankings will be eligible to compete in the Finals, so tournaments like the SATHIO GROUP Australian Badminton Open will be one to provide crucial ranking points as the tournament year rolls out.

Tjitte Weistra, Chief Executive Officer of Badminton Australia, comments that “the Australian Badminton Open is the flagship event for badminton in Australia and a fantastic event to showcase some of the best players in the world.”

And now, the long-awaited M&Q report is available.

Highlights include:

  • Fresh off their Thomas & Uber Cup win, China sends their top line-up of Mens, Womens and Mixed doubles pairings to Sydney.
  • Eager youngsters hoping to make some noise; including 2023 World Junior Men’s Singles winner Alwi Fahran from Indonesia.
  • Australian Women’s Doubles pair Setyana Mapasa and Angela Yu made their way up to an 8th ranking in the acceptance list, with Gronya Somerville and Kaitlyn Ea closely following at 11th seed.
  • 2023’s reigning Mixed Doubles champions Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping find themselves at number 1 seed in 2024 to protect their title.

With Olympic qualifications coming to a close, some top players have a choice on whether to continue battling it out across the Tour, or focus on training in preparation for the Games held in Paris in late July.

Nonetheless, where there is an opportunity, players from the Oceania region are sure to seize it.

Weistra recognises the high number of Australian representatives making it into the main draw and qualification list, “it is an opportunity for our own Australian players to measure themselves against the best and what better way to do that than in our own backyard.

With more and more Australian players playing in more international tournaments, we are getting stronger and stronger and I look forward to seeing our players compete at the world stage in Sydney.”
